U19 Red Starts Tournament Season Off with Golden Moment
Submitted By ANewman on Wednesday, May 29, 2019
U19 Red competed in the Brantford Queen of the Diamonds tournament to start the tournament season off on the May long weekend.

Day 1, Lightning Red secured two strong wins, 17-2 over Ontario Yankees Junior and 15-2 over Vaughan Vikings.  Lightning started out slow in the third and final game of the day, down 4-1 in the bottom half of the 7th rallied to finish with a 4-4 tie.

Day 2 saw the warmest temperatures of the young season.  Lightning U19 Red finished with two loses to Palmerston Marlins 10-2 and a close loss to LaSalle Gold 2-1; Red finished with a 2-2-1 in the Round Robin round, securing a 5th place and a spot in the ‘A’ playoff bracket commencing holiday Monday.

Monday temperatures were on the cooler side, but not the Lightning bats! In the quarter final game Lightning came out with the first statement of the day, winning 10-4 over the top ranked Tavistock Athletics. The semi-final game brought a chance for redemption vs. Palmerston Marlins.  Lightning took a 8-0 leading into the bottom of the 4th, which saw Palmerston notch 3 runs to make it a two-run game 8-3. Lightning didn’t let those three runs stop them and just like the storm that rolled in at the end of day Saturday, Lighting U19 Red rolled with 6 more runs over two innings to push the Marlins to a mercy of 14-4 final, moving Lightning into the ‘A’ final at 3 pm.

The ‘A’ final put the Lightning U19 Red against Oakville ’03.  Lightning struck first with a 2-0 lead after 1 inning. Oakville countered with the next 5 runs over two innings, pushing the score to 5-2 after the top of 3. In the bottom half of the inning Lightning struck with 2 runs of their own, followed by 1 run in the bottom of 4 to tie the game up. The score lasted all the way to the bottom of the 7th when Lightning scored the winning run off a single to left field securing the victory and gold medal.

Lightning surely made a statement with their play on the diamond this weekend. Coaches were very impressed on how quickly the players adjusted to playing outdoors; given this was the first time on the outdoor surface.

Go Lightning!
