Lightning Red Friday’s game saw a close loss to the Guelph Gators 1-0. Lightning just couldn’t get the bat’s going to start a rally.

Day two on Saturday saw two close games with local competitor Lucan-Ilderton. Lightning were able to get a spark going with their bats, coming away with the 6-3 victory to move to 1-1.

London’s third and final round robin game ended in a 3-3 tie vs. Tavistock Athletics. The game saw both teams solid defensively. This would put Tavistock & London in a tie for second after round robin play. With more runs scored, Tavistock ended in second place, followed by London. Lightning finished round robin with 9 runs for and 7 runs against.

Double knock out playoff bracket started Saturday night with Lightning facing Ontario Yankees Senior. London’s bats again went quiet with a 9-1 loss, sending Lightning to the lower bracket Sunday in a win or go home situation. Players were sent home to find their fire and passion for Sunday if they wanted to fight for a medal.

Find their fire & passion these young ladies did!

Sunday brought more solid offence along with the consistent defensive effort London was known for. Game 1 played at Fanshawe College new Alumni field was a rematch with Guelph & saw Lightning explode for 7 runs in the second inning to securing the 9-2 win in the 5th inning.

Moving back to the home of Lightning at Stronach stadium also set a rematch vs. Ontario Yankees Senior. London was down 2-1 after two innings, regrouping to score 4 runs in the top of the third to make it a 5-2 game. London’s offence kept rolling through the last two innings, securing the win 9-5.

London’s third game which ended up being the Bronze medal game saw London face Napanee Express. This game would see a tight defensive game, Napanee held a 2-0 lead after 2 innings, London quickly secured 2 in the top of the third to tie the game till top of 5 when London taking the lead 3-2. Napanee tied the game again in the bottom of the 6th

3-3. In the top of the 7th the thunder rolled with a huge Lightning strike for 8 runs! Lightning were able to hold on for an 11-5 victory, sending London to the finals, facing Tavistock for the 4th time this season.

London quickly went down 6-0 after two innings. Had the Lightning storm rolled through?

Not so fast! London started to string together single runs in the 4th, 5th & 6th innings, Tavistock responded with their own single run innings in the 5th & 6th to make the game

8-3. It was now the last at bat for Lightning in the bottom of the 7th, London saw a surge of 4 runs to now make the game 8-7. With two runners on and the winning run on second, London was down to its last out, Tavistock held London and secured the final out for the victory.

London Lightning U19 Red will be recharging their bats and fine tuning their D before heading to Fredericton, NB. The coaching staff could not be prouder of these young ladies battling right to the end. We are all busy now planning our departure to represent London and Ontario August 22-25th
